Reflections
Experience
This projects pushed me to explore
both personal expression and systematic thinking. From discovering
meaningful shapes in my own name to extracting letterforms from
architectural structures, I gradually moved from emotional storytelling to
technical precision. Building a full typeface on a 30° hexagonal grid
taught me how to balance creativity with constraints. Although it was
challenging, seeing my font applied on real-world items like posters and
tote bags made the journey feel rewarding and complete.
Observations
I realised how even the smallest
formal changes — a curve, an angle, a baseline shift — could dramatically
affect the tone of a typeface. Despite working with strict grids, I
noticed how certain letters still carried personality and softness. This
process also showed me how typography can express identity, mood, and
emotion, not just through shapes, but through layout, rhythm, and
composition.
Findings
I learned that good type design
is not just about drawing letters — it’s about building a consistent,
functional system that can adapt across different contexts. Technical
details like spacing, alignment, and vertical metrics play a huge role in
readability and tone. Most importantly, I discovered that the strongest
ideas often begin from something personal, and that emotion and logic can
coexist in type.
