Final Project Video
Reflections
Experience
Working on the final VFX project was a challenging yet fulfilling experience. I collaborated with my groupmate Lilin to produce a short video based on the theme “from despair to hope.” I took the lead in front of the camera as the main actor, while Lilin handled the camera work during our classroom shoot.
After filming, we followed an online tutorial to create a visual effect—an energy ball—using Adobe After Effects. Lilin faced some technical difficulties with missing plug-ins and tracking errors, which were resolved after consulting Mr. Martin and downloading additional resources from Video Copilot. Once the energy ball was successfully created, I helped refine its placement and timing within the composition.
In the post-production stage, I focused on the color correction and grading using Premiere Pro. I applied a desaturated black-and-white tone at the start of the video to reflect despair, and gradually transitioned into a warmer tone to symbolize hope. I also contributed to the sky replacement process and assisted in selecting background music and transitions to strengthen the emotional flow of the final video.
Observation
Throughout the process, I realized how important it is to be flexible and adaptable when working with visual effects. Even with a tutorial, unexpected problems like missing effects and poor tracking can arise, requiring careful troubleshooting. I also learned from Mr. Martin’s feedback that visual consistency—especially background choices and color tones—is essential to making effects feel believable. Our initial green background, for instance, was too harsh and distracting, and the sky replacement needed more blending to match the scene naturally. These experiences taught me to pay closer attention to visual harmony and detail in both planning and post-production.
Finding
This project allowed me to gain valuable skills in Adobe After Effects and Premiere Pro while deepening my understanding of visual storytelling. I discovered that color grading can do more than just improve visuals—it can reflect emotional transitions and support the narrative. I also learned how to work with feedback constructively and view it as part of the creative process. Overall, this experience strengthened my confidence in VFX work and gave me a clearer sense of how much detail and care goes into even a short video.
