Reflections

Experience

As a Bachelor of Design in Creative Media student, this project was an engaging introduction to the practical side of digital imaging and photography. Working on Project 1, which involved both physical and digital collage exercises, allowed me to explore various design principles and practice my creative skills. I enjoyed experimenting with manual cutouts for the physical collage, as it gave me a hands-on experience in arranging and layering different visual elements. Moving onto the digital collage, I had the chance to use Adobe Photoshop, which was challenging at first but ultimately rewarding as I became more comfortable with digital tools and layering techniques. Overall, this project enhanced my understanding of collage art and provided valuable insights into the creative process involved in digital imaging.

Observations

Throughout this assignment, I observed the differences between working with physical and digital media. Creating the physical collage required a meticulous approach to selecting and arranging cutouts, as any change to the layout was more permanent compared to digital tools. In contrast, the digital collage offered flexibility with options to experiment with layer arrangements, opacity, and blending modes. These differences helped me appreciate the strengths of both media in creative expression. Additionally, seeing my peers' work each week revealed the diverse interpretations and styles each person brought to the project. This experience highlighted the uniqueness of individual creativity and the multiple ways to approach the same design task.

Findings

Through this project, I learned that effective visual storytelling in collage requires a balance between composition, color, and thematic unity. The physical collage taught me the importance of pre-planning and committing to a design layout, while the digital collage showed me how digital tools can enhance creativity through trial and error. I also gained insights into the significance of each design element—how images, textures, and colors can communicate different moods and messages. This experience has helped me recognize the value of both precision and creativity in digital imaging, and I feel more equipped to express complex ideas visually.
