ꕤ Week 3 Composition Theory 1 // Visual Types and Shots

      ✩ Introduction to Composition
Composition refers to the arrangement of visual elements in a frame.
Effective composition enhances the meaning and impact of the scene.
Example: The Grand Budapest Hotel (Wes Anderson, 2014) uses composition to focus on subtle details

      .Basic Composition Rules
Visual Narrative: The composition should support the story being told.
Visual Flow: The arrangement of elements guides the viewer’s eye through the visual.
Visual Balance: Balancing the elements in a scene ensures harmony and stability.
Visual Hierarchy: The composition directs attention to the most important parts of the scene first.

      ✩ Types of Visual Shots
Establishing Shot: A wide shot that provides context for the setting and scale. Example: The Wizard of Oz(1939).
Bird's Eye View: A shot taken from directly above the subject, offering a unique perspective. Example: The Avengers (2012).
Frame within a Frame: Adds depth and visual interest by using background or foreground elements to frame the subject. Example: Mulan (1998).
Medium Shot: Frames a character from the waist up, commonly used to show body language. Example: Titanic.
Close-Up: Focuses on a character’s face or an intimate detail, emphasizing emotions and thoughts. Example: Get Out (2017).
Worm's Eye View: A shot from below, looking up at the subject, emphasizing power or importance. Example: The Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015).

      TASK 1

Create a unique character using Adobe Illustrator by combining pre-defined Vormator shapes. This task will help us develop skills in proportion, balance, color, and composition while mastering key Illustrator tools like the Selection Tool, Pen Tool, Pathfinder, Shape Builder, and more.

      Key Rules

Only use the provided Vormator shapes (no stretching or altering proportions).

       Combine and manipulate shapes creatively.

Experiment with colors, gradients, and sizes while keeping original proportions.

Optional: Give my character a backstory or theme.

      Working Process

      Week 1: Inspirations

      Figure 1, Sailor Moon.

For my character design, I drew inspiration from one of my favorite anime series, Sailor Moon. I focused on the iconic design of Sailor Moon herself, particularly her long, flowing hair, sailor-inspired uniform, and the heart symbol that represents love and justice.

I studied Sailor Moon’s hair, especially her twin buns and long pigtails, as they add a sense of elegance and flow to her character. I also looked at how her sailor uniform balances femininity with strength. The heart emblem, central to her design, symbolizes her power of love, which inspired me to incorporate similar elements into my character.

What I really like about Sailor Moon’s design is the way her hairstyle gives her a distinct silhouette, while the heart symbol adds emotional depth. Her uniform, blending soft shapes with a sense of heroism, is both stylish and empowering. The long, fluid lines of her hair and costume create a sense of grace while maintaining a strong, heroic presence.

Inspired by these elements, I decided to create a character that reflects duality, combining Sailor Moon’s signature traits with my own twist. My character has long, flowing hair like Sailor Moon, but in two contrasting colors to represent balance between opposing forces. The heart emblem on the chest of my character symbolizes love as a harmonizing power, much like Sailor Moon’s mission. By blending these elements, I aim to explore the themes of balance, love, and strength in my character design.

Week 2: Draft and Digital Creation

      Figure 2, My Sketch.

      Head
For my sketch, I drew inspiration from Sailor Moon’s iconic hairstyle, incorporating two large buns on top of the head and long, flowing twin braids to give the character a sense of elegance and fluidity. The rounded head shape and simple facial expression are also reminiscent of the charming and approachable look Sailor Moon presents.

      Body
Based the body on Sailor Moon’s sailor uniform, adding a heart emblem in the center of the chest to symbolize love and protection, which is central to Sailor Moon’s themes of justice and care. The puffed shoulder details are directly inspired by Sailor Moon’s uniform, giving the character a heroic and empowered stance.

      Arms and Hands
I emphasized the character’s arms by adding circular cuffs, much like Sailor Moon’s gloves, but simplified to reflect a more playful and stylized design. The smooth, flowing lines give a sense of grace and harmony.

      Skirt and Legs

The skirt is inspired by Sailor Moon’s sailor outfit but has a shorter, more rounded shape for a softer, more whimsical look. The legs are kept simple and long, emphasizing the character’s elegance and movement, much like the fluidity seen in Sailor Moon’s stance.

With these elements combined, I created a character that embodies the essence of Sailor Moon’s design: a figure of love, strength, and grace, while adding my own personal touches to make the character feel unique and playful.

      Week 3: Finalizing

      Figure 3, Final Look.

      Dualia Heartstrike

For my final character design, “Dualia Heartstrike,” I focused on creating a blend of two contrasting elements—light and dark—while still embodying the heroic and feminine qualities of Sailor Moon.

      Head and Hair

The two-tone color scheme of pink and blue represents duality, a key theme in the design. The character’s iconic twin buns and long braids are inspired by Sailor Moon, but the split colors suggest a balance between opposing forces, such as love and strength, or day and night. The heart-shaped face and simple expression make the character approachable yet mysterious, reinforcing the contrast.

      Upper Body

The heart symbol at the center of the chest ties into the character’s name, “Heartstrike,” symbolizing both love and power. The shoulder guards and cuffs add a sense of armor, showing the character is prepared for battle but still graceful. The simplicity of the white top allows the vibrant colors of the hair and skirt to stand out.

      Lower Body and Skirt

The skirt is a classic sailor-style, in deep blue to represent calmness and wisdom. It balances the more energetic pink used in the hair, creating a sense of harmony. The overall shape maintains a sleek and elegant appearance, reminiscent of the classic magical girl silhouette.

      Tail

The tail is a unique addition to the character, suggesting movement and fluidity, while adding a touch of playfulness. It gives the design a more dynamic, action-ready feel, while still tying into the character’s animalistic elements.

Through the use of symmetry, color contrasts, and a combination of organic and armored elements, “Dualia Heartstrike” represents the balance of beauty and strength, love and battle, making the character both visually striking and thematically rich.

      Reflection

This assignment was both challenging and creatively stimulating. Working with limited Vormator shapes pushed me to think outside the box and refine my design skills.

      Challenges

The biggest challenge was using only the Vormator shapes to create my character. It was difficult to form more detailed features like the hair and limbs while maintaining balance and symmetry. Developing the concept of “Dualia Heartstrike” also required careful thought to express duality without making the design feel too busy.

      Creative Use of Vormator Shapes

I used the shapes creatively to craft key elements. The twin buns and braids came from repeated the Bar and the Drop shapes to symbolize duality. The heart on the chest, made from the Drop forms, added identity, while the tail and skirt were built using the Tentacle and the Bar for a sense of movement and simplicity.

      Techniques Learned

I improved my skills in Illustrator, especially in shape manipulation, duplication, and the Pathfinder tool to merge and subtract shapes. I also experimented with color and gradients to emphasize the character’s theme of duality.

Overall, this task challenged me to be more resourceful and allowed me to learn valuable design techniques that will benefit future tasks.
